McLennan County Jail Roster Overview
The Sheriff's Office publishes two main tools for current custody. The first is a Current Inmate Listing PDF at https://apps.co.mclennan.tx.us/apps/injail.pdf, which the Sheriff says is updated once every hour. The second is the online Mugshots Application at https://webapps.co.mclennan.tx.us/mugshots/, which lets people search booked persons by name, booking number, race, sex, age, hair, eyes, bond type, bail, fine, offense, and case agency. The mugshot app is backed by a public JSON file.
The roster is for county custody only. People held in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice show in TDCJ tools. People held by the Federal Bureau of Prisons show in the BOP locator. Immigration holds may also route to a separate federal track. So a name that drops off the McLennan roster may still be in custody somewhere else, and a state or federal locator may be the place to check next.
The hourly PDF is best for fast scanning, since you can use the browser search. The Mugshots app is best when you want to filter by booking number, offense, or other fields. Both tools draw from the same booking database, so the data lines up between them within the refresh window. The Sheriff disclaims warranties on use or interpretation, which is a useful reminder that booking data can change quickly.
How to Use the McLennan County Inmate Roster
The Sheriff's main page links to both the PDF roster and the Mugshots app, along with visitation, mail rules, and open-records. The Sheriff page also notes that the office makes every effort to produce accurate data and gives no warranties on use or interpretation. See the Sheriff's Office page.
- Open the Sheriff's page and choose the Current Inmate Listing PDF or the Mugshots app.
- For the PDF, use the browser search to find a name. The list refreshes hourly.
- For the Mugshots app, type a last name or booking number and run the search.
- Read the result row for offense, bond type, bail, fine, and case agency.
- Click into the inmate detail to see the booking number and the full offense list.
- If the person is not on the roster, try a state or federal locator instead.
Roster Search Fields
The Mugshots app exposes a full set of fields. You can search any field on its own or combine them. The table below maps each field as captured from the public app.

What an Inmate Profile Shows
Each profile in the Mugshots app pulls from the public JSON behind the search tool. The top-level row shows image, name, CID, arrest ID, demographics, and book-in date. The arrest detail shows one or more offenses with bond, bail, fine, and case agency. Some fields a searcher might expect, such as date of birth, housing unit, next court date, and projected release date, are NOT in the inspected JSON. So treat the public roster as a snapshot of custody, not a full booking file.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Booking Number | BookNo tied to each offense hold. |
| Booking Date | BookIn date the offense or hold was entered. |
| Charges | Offense description and shorthand classification. |
| Bond Amount | Bail field in dollar format per offense. |
| Housing Unit | Not exposed in the public JSON. |
| Projected Release | Not exposed in the public JSON. |

McLennan County Jail Facilities
The Sheriff runs the main county jail on State Highway 6 in Waco. A separate Jack Harwell Detention Center sits on East Marlin Highway in Waco and has been used as additional detention space. Juvenile detention runs through the Bill Logue Juvenile Justice Center, which is part of a separate juvenile system because juvenile records are restricted.

Booking Process in McLennan County
The booking timeline starts at arrest. The arresting agency transports the person to county intake. Intake creates or locates a CID, records name and demographics, takes the booking photo, and enters the offense, warrant, book-in number, bond, fine, and case agency. Texas Code of Criminal Procedure requires prompt magistrate appearance, where the magistrate sets bond conditions and reads charges.
Bond can be surety, cash, personal bond, or no-bond depending on the charge and warrant. The Sheriff's bond rules require specific paperwork. Submissions need an Instanter court date in certain cases, a red-stamped Defendant Copy, original and copies presented together, the correct court and town, and same-day notarization. For full warrant and bond rules, see warrant records.
Classification follows booking. Staff assess risk, charge level, gang affiliations, and medical or mental-health needs, then assign housing. The public mugshot app does not expose the housing or the classification flag, which is why family and attorneys often need to call the jail to confirm placement. Visitor lists are also built off the booking record, so name corrections after booking can slow visitation approval.
Bond posting can be delayed when a person holds more than one charge. A single bond paid clears only the related charge, and any open hold from another agency keeps the person in custody. A TDCJ tag or an outside-agency case agency in the mugshot data is a strong sign that release will run through a transfer instead of the front door.
Visitation Hours and Rules
Visitation runs at the Shepherd Mullens Correctional Visitation Center on Sunday and Monday only. The Sheriff page notes that on April 5, 2026, in-facility visitation moves to the McLennan County Jail Bond Office Lobby. Visitors must be on the inmate's visitation list and have a Getting Out account. Remote visitation is available Tuesday through Saturday on the Getting Out and Go Visit apps.
| Day | Hours | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. | In-facility; registration ends 4:30 p.m. |
| Monday | 12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. | In-facility; registration ends 7:30 p.m. |

Each inmate is allowed two visits of 30 minutes each. Schedules can change, so confirm the day's window with the Sheriff before traveling.
The Sheriff's open-records process runs through a GovQA portal for Sheriff's Office Open Records Request. That route is separate from court-record requests, which go to the District Clerk or County Clerk. For mugshot images, custody history printouts, or jail incident summaries, the open-records route is usually where the request belongs. Texas Government Code section 552.108 may withhold parts of active investigations, so the office can release some fields and withhold others within the same request.
Visitors must be on the inmate's approved list before they show up. A first-time approval can take time, so build that buffer into the plan. The Getting Out account is also a one-time setup that handles both in-facility and remote visits going forward.
How to Contact an Inmate
Personal mail goes through digital delivery on the Getting Out tablet system. Mail must be sent to the facility name and state, then the inmate name and identifier, then PO Box 247, Phoenix, MD 21131. Include the sender's full name and physical address. Attorney-client privileged mail, packages, and money orders do NOT go to the Phoenix address. Those go directly to the facility.
Personal mail must include the full facility name with no abbreviations and the state. It also needs the inmate's full name and identifier, plus the sender's full name and physical address. Mail to the Phoenix address is for letters, pictures, and drawings only. Checks, money orders, and attorney-client privileged mail follow separate rules and must not be sent to Phoenix. Attorney-client privileged mail, packages, and parcels go directly to the facility.
For release notifications, the national VINELink service offers free custody alerts by phone, email, or text. Choose Texas and the McLennan facility to set up an alert.
VINELink is the public custody-notification system used for many county facilities, including McLennan County.
Commissary and Inmate Funds
The Sheriff page confirms that Getting Out tablets and Getting Out and Go Visit remote video apps are in use. The county page does not list the commissary deposit vendor, kiosk locations, money order rules, or specific phone and tablet pricing. Contact the jail directly for current deposit options and limits before sending money.
For people held by the federal Bureau of Prisons after transfer from McLennan County, the federal locator is the right tool.
The BOP locator searches by name, race, sex, age, or by BOP register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number for people in federal custody.
The Sheriff page also lists Crimestoppers as a partner for tips. Crimestoppers does not run inmate accounts, but a tip can lead to a reward in some categories and may help close an open case tied to a person already in custody.
